We had been using Pumpen make Hermetic Pumps for Ammonia. Infact over last Ten Years or so on various installation there was no problem at all. Recently on one site the client is complaiing that the pump is mkaing loud noise & drawing huge current.

We are yet to access the situation, but would like to know the practical views of the members about their experience. Should we open up that & check it up
(ofcourse we shall have to do that).

But should one try & repair that on site / workshop?

Very limited real info here

Is the pumptrap low on liquid during this noise

Noise and amp draw sounds like cavitation.

But like I said very limited info makes it real hard to give you anything solid.

If there is a suction strainer, this might need a clean up.

Not yet. The site is almost 600 Kms away & I am getting the Photos etc. The plant is operational & hence the client has decided that it shall be done in next couple of days

OK,
another option is that the inlet temperature of the pump is (a lot) higher than normal. The liquid starts boiling(cavitation) in the suction. So, an exchanger/cooler problem.
A dirty strainer gives pressure and current fluctuations, at least, in the early begin of the problem.

Today we could open up the pump. There was a problem with the bearing. That was the reason for noise & exta current

We are repairing that now. Lets see what happens next.
