Advance Features Review

MessageCenter

Communicates in real English, not codes. Makes it easy for drivers and technicians to understand the operating status of the unit. Information and step-by-step instructions are displayed to help operators perform tasks.
Visibility is difficult from most viewing angles.
Range Lock

Provides maximum ability to lock operating modes. Range Lock can force the unit to run in either Start/Stop mode or Continuous mode when a setpoint is selected within a particular temperature range. Two ranges may be selected.
Similar to CSFR in older micros but is not like OptiSet™.
Load Protection Alarms

To protect the load, the Out-Of-Range alarm monitors box temperature. If it moves more than a programmed number of degrees (4, 5 or 7 F) away from setpoint for 15 minutes there will be an alarm. The unit may be programmed shutdown if temperature remains out of range for 45 minutes.
The only other way the system has to measure its ability to maintain box temperature is the Check Airflow alarm. It determines that supply air is actually colder than return air during cool.
Detect low refrigerant charge

Supposed to help service technicians to recognize a unit low on charge.
Actually detects low refrigerant pressure. The unit would be almost empty and have other symptoms before this alarm will activate. May protect unit from damage if set to shutdown. Does not protect the load.

Monitors Many System Sensors

The Advance Micro constantly monitors 16 pressure, temperature and other sensors to maintain box temperature or sense trouble. None of the temperature sensors are graded type.
Thermo King µP-VI controller monitors the same information. Return and discharge (supply) air temperature sensors are graded type for increased accuracy.
Supply air temperature
Suction pressure
Compressor discharge temperature
RPM
Return air temperature
Discharge pressure
Compressor suction temperature
Oil level
Ambient air temperature
Voltage
Coolant temperature
Fuel level
Evaporator coil temperature
Amperage
Oil pressure
Coolant level

Unattended Pre-trip

Electrically tests the circuits of some operating components. Pre-trip tests operation and sealing ability of the compressor and solenoid valves. Gives a meaningful “PASS/FAIL”. Much improved over earlier micro.
Does not monitor temperature differential during the pre-trip. It cannot test the actual ability of the unit to change temperature.
Diagnostic and Test modes

Technicians can force the system to energize particular components or modes for diagnostic tests. LED indicators on control box help to identify faulty circuits. This feature is new to this controller.
The available tests are not as flexible and useful as Service Test and Relay Board test modes.
Alarms

The MessageCenter gives the name of the alarm for easy, quick and accurate identification. No looking up the alarm code. Alarms do not disappear when unit is turned off. The in-active alarm list will hold them until cleared by a technician. This feature is new to this controller.
You still need a technician to interpret most alarms so codes are not much of a problem for operators. Cannot clear alarms individually.
Standard data logger with 512k memory

Plenty of memory to maintain unit information between services.
The standard Data Acquisition System has the same amount of memory.
Confirmation of Setpoint Change

Screen and lights flash if the setpoint is changed but ENTER is not pushed. Helps prevent incomplete setpoint changes. MessageCenter confirms that the new setpoint has been accepted.
In addition, mP-VI can also be programmed to beep.
Five service hour meters

Customers can track multiple service intervals.
Nobody will use all of those meters.
Minimal Number of Keys

Fewer keys that are dedicated to specific functions make it easy for operators.
The mP-VI control keys give easy, direct access to functions and information.
Colored LED Indicators

Bright color-coded lights for operating status and alarms are easier to see than icons.
Icons are easier to understand at a glance.
Windows based download software

Two software applications, DataLink™ and DataShare™ allow downloading and sharing of unit information. Better than earlier applications.
WinTrac™ does it all.

Software updates flash loadable

No need to change PROM chips when software needs to be updated.

Can transfer data with PCM/CIA card

No need to carry that laptop around. Just stick the card in the slot and go.
Sounds good but has many limitations. This technology was not designed for the conditions we experience.
