View Full Version : Scrubing the data base to improve speed!

Perhaps the site should consider a system that delets all users who have only 1 post total after a month as with all users with no posts after the same timming?

This I think would greatly improve the speed and efficiency of the data base!

Thats abit harsh MG (is that an acronym for Mean G**):D

What is a few seconds wait compared to the potential of forging new meaningful relationships with similar people to ourselves and ........... oh I see why:(:(

Go for it then, scrub them. Let thier data be stricken from the annals of our beloved forum.;)

Weren't you having trouble with poor internet speeds before MG ?

I agree with speeding things up but not to delete posts. Surely there must be a faster way - this site is painfully slow. Iv'e got a crappy slow connection but it works faster on all other sites. Is there something we can do with our internet/antivirus settings to improve speed?

I think members that haven't been online for a certain time or have only posted once or twice should be deleted to free up space as Mg says. There are so many people that find this website ask a question and then we never hear of them again. If the worse comes to the worse though and they want to post something again then surely they can just sign up again?

Too many spammers doing nothing but saying "Send me all your data to this email." and never returning and such why waste time with such useles things?

if all they are going to do is post once and never return why waste the space? Several forums I know of do this and it greatly reduces load on the DB server and over all improves the servers respons time.

Nothing to do with my internet connection two differant towns three differant providers, several differant computers and all the same odd error with it taking forever.

Exactly if there ONE all so important wamb bam gon post is so important they will sign up again and and post and never return again rinse n repeate.

that way thoughs that may actualy post a reply or two wont be slowed down by the clutter.

OK, I'll jump in again.

I have also had the odd slowdown and have put it down to dear old Microsoft and the performance of Internet Explorer.

So I changed over to Mozilla Firefox and the speed increase has been quite amazing and not just on this site.

So I would like to suggest that you try it, it's a 5.5mb download, and post your comments regarding it's performance please.

Did I mention same problem under Noppix, Fire fox, IE? Doesn't matter whay I use, some thing to do with how the site is communicating with the soft ware.

It is getting really bad sometimes taking 3/4 mins and countless refresh clicks.

Maybe MG has got a point. Perhaps the site could do with a little pruning, although maybe not quite as severe as MG suggests.

Pruning the posts, threads or members will not enhance the speed of the forum. It would only ever increase the speed of the 'search' function.

There may however be a problem with the adverts or something on the site, although I have never experienced any problems with the speed.
I think Webram is looking into it.

Hi, The MG Pony :)

Thats the exact problem I have, several systems multiple differant opperating systems and browsers, all the same thing.

Sorry about your problems, but I am much far away from RE server and without any problems so far...seems your problem is maybe in some conflicts within your systems and maybe site....or with your ISP throttling complete traffic....slow and old equipment etc...

Best regards, Josip :)

If that where true other sites would have the same problem, but they do not it is ONLY this site, a Dual 3.2GHz Xeon server with 4MBit connection that has 2 gigs ram on a 3Com 3900 series switch has the same issue as any other PC I vissit this site on so certainly not old cuomputer or under powered ;)

True, it is not old and not weak;), maybe to switch to Mozilla....hope Dez will find out something...I'm not an expert for this, just trying to help...

BTW...last night I faced some problems...

I was logged and reading unread posts, but looking again for unread posts (click on link) I was logged out automatically....that last for couple of minutes (need to log in few times, open RE in another tab...later on no problem....

Best regards, Josip :)

I've come on under knoppix a totaly differant O/S and explorer.

It is some thing internal to this one site, I've never seen it on any other!

And I still think scrubing the data base by time Vs total post count system would work well.

Not pruning posts but pruning the one shot wonders by erasing the waste of space accounts they create to never use!

Mate its your PCs relationship to this site, don't know how or why coz Im not a computer guy but all i know is this, I have 512k connection (nothing flash there), am in Australia (which has a very poor broadband service) and am using Firefox on a IBM lenovo T60 laptop (also nothing flash there) and i have no issues what so ever. When I say no issues i mean page loads instantly, no 3/4 minute wait. I know what you mean though, i use a forum that is SLOW at its server end, this IS NOT ONE OF THEM, I guarantee it or I'd see it too.

Is it your firewall or anti spam programs that are doing this?

The site seems a lot faster today. Is it because we aren't getting the Google ad's inbetween posts now Dez?

Oh for christ sake how many times do I need to repeat my bloody self!

FACT: FIVE or so DIFFERANT COMPUTERS IN TWO DIFFERANT CITIES SAME PROBLEM

I am, as we speek, in Surrey, BC, using a friends PC and same sh*t as my server at home!

But this is about geting rid of two year old accounts with the users only post being "Please send me your data"

Deleting these accounts will NOT make the forum any faster.

Deleting posts/threads will also NOT make this site any faster.

The only thing that would actually make this site faster is that if there were less members active at any one time. And even this would not really be noticeable.

I believe its the adverts here that might be making it slow for certain users.

If you are sitting behind a firewall that doesn't like a particular site/ http address or link then that will be the problem, because the link from that site will take long and then it might even change itself.

It also could be your area, ISP provider, browser, OS, internet settings or just about anything else.

I personally never had a problem with the speed of this site, but there do seem to be a number of people that are having a problem. I think Webram is still looking into it.

sorry mate what was that I didn't catch you, can you please repeat yourself...

you are right, let the whole thing change and erase everyones posts just coz you can't work out your issue...
its not the server or i would see it too, try your ISP first.

Never had an issue in 6 years.

You still don't quite grasp the point do you 750?

It improves reliability as well that was the main point, I hate wasted space, and thats all thoughs people are that make just 1 post and it isn't even one worth keeping, "send all me you data to *email addy*"

***Edited by Frank**

But again this is not the point of why I started this thread, it was the fact we have a ton of garbage posts and wasted database area on 1 shot wonders that never return just going "gimme you data to me email!"

Geting rid of that trash, greatly improves the query function, increases reliability and will speed up browsing as every time you change a thread a BD opperation happens to refresh the list, don't forget what a web site like this is, a giant database, any thing that can be don to keep it free of junk as possible improves every thing! Especialy security and reliability!!!

I think your message has been heard load and clear MG. Lets leave it now and see what Webram comes up with. Frank

Well maybe you should push to be a moderator then you can erase as you see fit ;)

I do grasp your point... I think its you who cannot see the other side of the coin - not everyone has these issues so it is not necessarily the server and as others have said deleting posts will not necessarily speed up what you see at your end.

Why don't you start be deleting your 964 posts and see if that helps to speed things up a bit :D:D:D

Of all the computers you try are you using the same ISP...

I just don't think the whole database should be censored because you have issues, these one hit wonders as you describe it may contain info.

Ironically this thread is taking up your precious bandwidth :D

It is not just the posts it is the deat accounts both aut to be removed, it is the removal of the inactive non contributing accounts that take the toll

There are three majour ISP

Rogers

Shaw

CCNet (DeltaCable)

So it may be a server seting that does not play well with a country tag but lets ignor my problem lets look at the benifits to the server

It improves reliability

It reduces wasted space

It improves DB Speed (Used allot more then some seem to think)

Generaly good things happen

THIS thread is nothing to do with my issue, I have no idea how it ended up like this but who cares still get rid of wasted DB space and is not censoring, it is called maintanance, if there useles post of "Gimme" with no feed back is so important to them they'll easily create a new account and spam again.

I took you up on your recommendation to download Firefox. Man, Oh man is that a difference.

It's literally like going from dial-up to DSL!

I can now really enjoy my cable modem. :D

Glad to hear about the improvement for one and all.

Yep the spell checker is the best add-on without doubt. A red underline with a correction via a right-click - simple, done it twice in this post already !!

To Firefox's users!
NoScript is great ad-on and greatly improve speed, because forbids scripts to bee executed without your consent. Most of scripts are adds and you choose which of them you allow to execute.
