can anyone clarify if the legal fitting on any unit for r410a is 5/16 connection or as i have found on some units from the states that thay have 1/4 connections ... is this fgas applicable

We don't have laws telling us what to do but we do have guidelines.
If you dis-reguard the guidelines and somthing goes wrong then you open you're self up to possible legal penalties.
So you could use normal gauges on 410 with no problems but if somthing goes wrong and especialy if someone gets hurt then the HSE would ask why you were not following the guidelines.
