R600 is purified refrigeration-quality Butane. (NOT barbecue gas).

It's a refrigerant in its own right, often used in European domestic refrigerators and in some specialised industrial systems.

It isn't a "drop in" replacement for CFCs or HCFCs in the normal sense that you take one gas out and replace it with another.

Because of the potential hazards, systems that work on R600 are optimised for that purpose. Design considerations are given to the type and placement of electrical parts etc.

If you are considering handling it, there are special requirements and the supliers in the UK will offer courses on its safety in use before they will sell it.
